Short profile

Archimedes Foundation is an independent agency established by the Estonian government in 1997 with the objective to coordinate and implement different EU programmes and projects in the field of training, education, research, technological development and innovation. It is the coordinator of COST - European Cooperation in the field of Scientific and Technical Research in Estonia and a partner of IRC network. Archimedes is the implementing body for Socrates and Youth Programmes. It is the host of Estonian Current Research System. It is entitled to organize the activities of the Higher Education Quality Assessment Centre.

The main objectives of the Archimedes Foundation are to manage and use the appropriations allocated to the Foundation to: (a) promote and modernise Estonian education and science systems and reinforce co-operation with other spheres of society; (b) prepare Estonian education, science systems and youth organisations for joining the European Union structures (c) prepare Estonian education and science systems and youth institutions for participating in and implementing various programs of both the European Union and other programs.

Activities in the field of Regional Innovation

Archimedes Foundation is acting as national contact point organisation for EU Fifth Framework programme. It also hosts such programmes and projects like Socrates and Youth for Europe programmes, Estonian Innovation Relay Centre Project, National Training Institutions of European Social Fund, Organisation for New Energy Technologies (OPET) project, European Survey of Information Society and several smaller SME specific projects.

Participation of Archimedes Foundation in the current proposal will enable to provide Estonian regions and regional actors with possibilities for exchange of best practice and know how transfer from other European regions, belonging to the network, which would help them to better prepare their own innovation actions. Archimedes Foundation will act in this project as intermediary between the experiences gained in European RIS/RITTS regions and the needs of its regional clients in Estonia. Through its participation in proposed project actions Archimedes Foundation will strengthen its competence base for being able to better serve its clients needs for developing regional innovation actions. Combination between benefits of the activities proposed under this network and already ongoing developments and actions where Archimedes Foundation is involved would thus create a synergetic effect for our regional innovation clients.
