Short profileThe Nicosia Chamber of Commerce and Industry (NCCI) has been actively pursuing the economic, social and cultural development of the city, as well as the district of Nicosia, offering substantial, multisided services to its entrepreneurial community members. It promotes initiatives and encourages communication, acting as a bridging agent on issues that involve economic activity. Furthermore the Chamber attends to its traditional role in resolving the commensurate problems of the business community of Nicosia on industry, trade, services and local administration issues. The NCCI strongly believes in capitalizing on the various European programs and initiatives offered to Cyprus as a prospective member of the E.U. for assisting in increasing cooperation among the business community. It is in the process of establishing a non-profit intermediary establishment that will act as a bridging agent on regional development projects in order to utilize the structural and other aid. The Chamber is already participating in European programs and is placing great emphasis on awareness of its entrepreneurial members within the process of harmonization. Activities in the field of Regional InnovationThe Nicosia Chamber of Commerce is by nature an agent of Regional Development. It attends meetings organised by local authorities, municipalities, various Ministries, and Planning Bureau for issues regarding regional development. Furthermore, it promotes initiatives of its own such as the forthcoming conference on the 'Business Development of the Region on the West of Nicosia', and cooperates with the Ministry of Industry and Trade on the issues involving the 18 industry zones and 3 industry regions/parks in Nicosia. The Chamber promotes initiatives and encourages communication, acting as a bridging agent on issues, which involve regional innovation. For example, last week the Chamber organised a closed session with Nicosia Businessmen who are interested in the setting up businesses in the Telecommunications area, with the attendance of a Greek expert who wrote the new law in Greece on telecommunications, and who advised them on the problems they should avoid but also the best practise procedures that must be followed. Furthermore, the Chamber has taken part in local research projects regarding innovation and is expecting to play an instrumental role in one of them in the dissemination part, in the creation of a network for innovating companies in the hope of setting up a pilot case. The issues of innovation in Cyprus are at the primary stages in Cyprus. There is no one single institution in Cyprus with the role of regional authority for innovation, as there is no one at a National Level. However all the agents involved indirectly (ministry of Industry, Institute of Technology, local Tertiary Education Institutions/Research Centres (which are members of ours) are part of the network with which we come in continues contact. Furthermore, the member of the Chamber who is assigned to work in the VERITE thematic network has been the leading consultant for Cyprus in the consortium, which won the project for 'Innovation policy in the accession countries' for DG enterprise (ongoing). |
