Short profile

TEKES, the National Technology Agency of Finland, is the main public financing and expert organisation for research and technological development in Finland. Tekes finances industrial projects as well as projects in research institutes.

Tekes especially promotes innovative, risk-intensive projects. The primary objective of Tekes is to promote the competitiveness of Finnish industry and the service sector by assisting in the creation of world-class technology and technological know-how.

Tekes has a budget of 380 million euros, a source of funding for 2000 projects annually. Tekes works in close cooperation with its clients in companies and research institutes. It is headquartered in Helsinki, with regional offices throughout Finland and abroad. Over 300 dedicated personnel support Tekes' activities.

Activities in the field of Regional Innovation

TEKES is the key player in Finnish technology policy. Tekes finances industrial R&D for 235 MECU a year and 60 % of that goes to SME's and 63 % outside Uusimaa, which is the county where Helsinki is situated. Finland has 15 regions or counties and each of them has an Employment and Economic Developement Center, and TEKES has two or more persons working in each of those centres.

TEKES has developed a number of innovation management tools, including Technology Clinics, and has a wide participation on the diffusion of innovation in all regions of Finland. All Finnish regions are developing a regional technology strategy just now, and the personnel of TEKES working in R&D centres are actively involved. TEKES also finances research projects at all the universities in Finland teaching technology and also in Tehcnical Colleges, which are situated in different regions.
