Short profile

The University of Thessaly was founded in 1984. The location of the University is the town of Volos. The academic organization of the University of Thessaly starting in the academic year 2000-01 is as follows:

• School of Humanities (including 4 Departments),
• Polytechnic School (including 5 Departments),
• School of Health Sciences (including 3 Departments),
• School of Agricultural Sciences (including 2 Departments),
• Independent Departments (2),
• Elective Studies Programs (3).

The Production Management Laboratory was founded in 1995. It supports teaching and conducts research in the areas of:

• Operations Research & Operations Management,
• Modeling & Analysis of Manufacturing Systems,
• Planning & Control of Production-Inventory Systems,
• Simulation of Discrete Event Dynamic Systems,
• Reliability & Maintainability Engineering,
• Strategic Management, and
• Technology & Innovation Management, Strategy, & Policy.

People in Production Management Laboratory have been participating in the submission, execution and documentation of a large number of projects financed by the European Community, the General Secretariat of Research and Technology, the Ministry of National Economy, the Ministry of Employment, the Region of Thessaly, etc.

The most important and relevant of those projects are: (a) Development of Work Packages for the INNOVATION Program of the Greek Innovation Relay Centers, (b) Development of Regional Innovation Strategy in Thessaly (RIS), (c) Innovative Management Techniques for Metal Industry (ADAPT/INAP II), (d) Implementation of New Technologies for SMES, (e) Implementation of Innovation Strategy in Thessaly (RIS+), (f) INNOREGIO Programme of The Region of Thessaly, (g) LEONARDO (Thessaloniki Technology Park) and (h) Innovative Ventures in Thessaly (INVENT).

Activities in the field of Regional Innovation

University of Thessaly has signed an agreement with the General Secretariat of the Region of Thessaly so as to implement the RIS and RIS+ of Thessaly. It also represent the region as a principal partner of the InnoRegio project (RECITE II) for the diffusion of IMTs in the companies of Thessaly through seminars, technology audits and pilot applications.

The University is the Official Consultant of the Region of Thessaly for Innovation and Technology Transfer Issues. That has been demonstrated all those years by appointed the University as the Scientific and Accounting Partner in all the Region's relevant projects. It supported the application of RIS, RIS+ projects in the Region of Thessaly. It is also a partner of the InnoRegio project (RECITE II) for the diffusion of IMTs in the companies of Thessaly through seminars, technology audits and pilot applications.
