Short profile

Urban and Regional Innovation research unit (URENIO) is an institution for the promotion of research and the supply of scientific and technological services. URENIO is part of the Department of Urban and Regional Planning and Development in the Faculty of Engineering, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. The Unit is mainly involved in competitive R&D projects of the EU Framework Programme and the innovative actions of the ERDF.

URENIO's research focuses on cities and regions which base their development on R&D, technological innovation, technology-intensive companies, technology infrastructure, knowledge and information networks. Central research theme is the territories of technological innovation including technology districts, science parks and technopoles, innovating regions and regional innovation strategies, and virtual innovation environment and intelligent cities. We are working on models of innovative areas (districts, technopoles, regions), on models of innovation processes (spin-offs, producer-supplier relations, technology co-operation, new product development), and policies that may be transferred from one region to another.

Main responsibilities in the network

  • Management and coordination of the project. URENIO is responsible for the implementation of the work programme.
  • Development and enrichment of the web portal for Innovation Management Tools, services and providers
  • Coordination of a web based discussion forum

Expertise in the defined role

URENIO combines expertise in the fields of regional innovation strategies and implementation of pilot applications promoting innovation in SMEs with significant management experience gained through the participation in several national and European programmes. The staff covers a wide range of technical and management qualifications (urban and regional planning, industrial sociology, chemical engineering, electrical engineering, information technology) and is well experienced in working on innovation issues from the elaboration of innovation strategies at regional level to the adaptation of innovation management techniques at SME level.

Projects that mostly contribute to the advancement of the management and technical capabilities of URENIO related to this project are the following on-going European projects:

  • Innoregio, an inter-regional co-operation project, in which participate six European regions, co-ordinated by URENIO research unit. It focuses on the development and diffusion of technologies supporting innovation and the improvement of the technological capabilities of all the agents of the regional innovation system: SMEs, technology providers, innovation funding organisations, technology transfer organisations, research and technological development institutions.
  • ONLI, an inter-regional co-operation programme of six partners. The project deals with the development of a virtual on-stop-shop network to provide on line services related to innovation management, technology transfer, and spin-off support to European SMEs.

URENIO is actually developing a number of on-line innovation development tools, such as benchmarking, technology evaluation, e-learning on innovation management, portal to innovation, and it is considered as the most important organisation of Central Macedonia for the promotion of innovation.

URENIO will also develop the web portal of IMT providers. It has already developed a similar web portal with institutes that promote innovation in Greece and especially in Central Macedonia (http://portal.urenio.org). One of the objectives for the web portal is the activation of European companies in Innovation and Knowledge Management through facilitation in reaching international expertise.

Activities in the field of Regional Innovation

URENIO research init has a good knowledge of RIS-RITTS initiatives, since it has managed a good number of such projects, knowledge of RIS networking gained from the creation and support of the Greek RIS network, and knowledge of IMTs application and dissemination gained during the implementation of the EU projects INNOREGIO and ONLI.

URENIO was the contract holder and had the management of the Regional Technology Plan, and actually manages the RIS+ of Central Macedonia; is the leader of the inter-regional project InnoRegio for the dissemination of Innovation Management Techniques to 2.400 SMEs in 6 EU regions; is principal partner in the projects InnoTender and Onli of the Innovation Programme (5th FP) and it has participated in the management of n many RIS-RITTS projects in Greece.
